Oval image on 6 ½” x 8 ½” mount. Excellent condition. 2/3 length standing view wearing 9 button frock coat, officer’s sash, belt with rectangular buckle, and sword. His hat rests on a prop mantle, with infantry insignia and numbers “91” clearly visible. No photographer’s marks. Typed biographical info attached on reverse.

Born in 1817/18 in Maryland, Benjamin J. Tayman was a resident of Philadelphia when he enlisted on 12/4/61 as an Adjutant. Commissioned into Field & Staff, 91st PA. Promoted to Captain by Brevet; Major by Brevet; Lt. Colonel by Brevet; and Colonel by Brevet on 8/18/64. Arrested and tried by court martial in May 1863 for neglect of duty and misbehavior before the enemy; he was found not guilty. Mustered out on 12/4/64. Appointed Major in the 7th US Volunteers on 6/26/65, but was discharged by special order on 12/20/65 because he did not pass the required examination. Tayman returned to Philadelphia where he worked in a factory. He died in 1889.
