Front mark: “Partridge photo / San Francisco/ 121 Post Street.” Group photo 13.5 x 8.75, with khaki brown matt, in period gilt frame,” 19.5 x 15.5,” with wooden back and hang-wire. This crisp photo features 77 members of Co. “D” on grouped on a hill in San Francisco, in November 1899, in route to duty in the Philippines. Frame is chipped in lower right, and slightly worn elsewhere. Otherwise, VG and attractive.

The 42nd USV Infantry was one of 25 regiments comprising the “Philippine” Division that was organized to replace the state regiments that had been sent to the to quell the insurrection that had broken out there following Spanish American War. Mustered at Ft. Niagara, NY, in the summer of 1899, this regiment had arrived by train in San Francisco that November. Shipping out to the Philippine via Hawaii, the unit arrived in Manila in January 1900, where it served through May 1901, when it was returned to the states, and mustered out in San Francisco.

In the photo foreground, mustachioed Captain Frank Keck sits surrounded by four company sergeants, seven of his eight corporals, and one of two lieutenants. This photo and the company roster may be further researched by googling “The Forty Second Foot: A History of the Forty Second Regiment of Infantry Organized for Service in the Philippine Insurrection, 1900-1901-1902.” A fascinating memento from the long forgotten Philippine Insurrection.  [jp]
