This albumen photo is still housed in its original oval frame with wood backing. The view shows Private Jacob H. Umstead of Company C, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry standing at the position of “ATTENTION.”

Umstead is shown bareheaded showing a full head of brown hair. He wears a dark blue standard issue sack coat with tinted yellow buttons and sky-blue trousers. At his waist is a black leather belt with an oval Pattern 1839 US belt plate also tinted yellow. Attached to the belt is a black cap box. Across his chest is a black leather sling for his cartridge box. Umstead’s shoes are also colored black while the carpet on which he stands is a mixed red with lighter brown decoration. At Umstead’s side is a Springfield musket with fixed bayonet. The wood of the weapon is tinted brown while iron surfaces are silver. The artist even managed to get a wonderful skin tone for the subjects face and hands. The background is a bluish green.

Tinting is excellent and was expertly done. Image is clear and in excellent condition. At bottom is a photographer’s mark for George A. Lenzi of Norristown, Pa.

The framed item meas. approx.12.50 x 15.00 inches. Frame has a wonderful raised edge decoration of scrolls and flowers. There are small amounts of chipping and surface dirt from age and storage. Wood panel on reverse has a 20th Century looking pencil inscription that reads “GRANDFATHER UMSTEAD CO. C 51 P.V. 1864.”

Jacob H. Umstead was born August 10, 1842. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on March 7, 1864 and was discharged at Alexandria, Virginia on July 27, 1865. During his time of service his regiment was in the 9th Corps and saw action at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad and Hatcher’s Run.

Mr. Umstead died October 30, 1918 and is buried in Keely’s Church Cemetery, Schwenksville, Pennsylvania.  [ad]
