A very clear outdoor photo of some Yankee soldiers posed on a heavy fortress gun mounted in a hilltop fort on the edge of a city. The background is tad light, but a cityscape is behind them, with a large factory or institutional building especially visible at left. The guns are mounted “en barbette,” to fire over the breastwork in front of them. If we were to guess, the likeliest location would be one of the forts erected to defend Washington, D.C. Three guns face off to the left; a fourth is positioned at a far angle of the breastwork and is pointed away from the camera; a fifth gun is right under the camera and it seems clear the cameraman has positioned himself on top of the breastwork.

Five soldiers in frock coats pose around the leftmost gun. One with his hand on the breech wears an artillery fuse pouch. One rests an arm on the gun carriage and three pose with levers. A figure at right with hand on hip and wearing a kepi looks on, but may be a member of the camera crew. Aside from the fuze box and one cartridge box of some sort worn by the soldier at the foot of the carriage, the men are unarmed and seem like visitors who have picked up some handy implements to pose. Nevertheless, it is an active fortification. Ammunition and implements are visible. The gun under the camera shows a vent cover in place and in the right rear an armed sentry at shoulder arms is positioned on the breastwork.

Neither photographer or location is noted, but some detective work might identify it. Fort Stevens has been suggested as a location, but there are a lot of candidates. There is a lot of interesting detail in any case. The image is on a period mount in a 10 1/2" x 8 3/4" modern frame. The mount is about 7.5 by 10 inches and the image itself is about 6 by 8 inches. There are some light foxing spots on the mount. Only two hit the albumen, one at upper right and one at lower left, along with a small ink blot at lower left touching the gun platform on which the soldiers stand, but not affecting any of the figures. A nicely composed outdoor view. [sr]
