Image is from Brady’s INCIDENTS OF THE WAR series and is titled “HARPERS FERRY & VICINITY, VA - 22ND N.Y.S.N.G."

Pictured are four Corporals, four Sergeants, one 1st Sergeant and two officers all posed in front of a large wall tent. The men are arranged to fill the area in front of the tent opening. Some are standing while others are seated or lying on the ground. All of the NCOs wear their waistbelts with cap boxes that have small “EXCELSIOR” stamped brass insignia attached and scabbards for their sword bayonets, while the officers wear their belts and swords. The seated and standing NCOs also hold their two band Enfield rifles with sword bayonets attached while the weapons belonging to the tree men laying on the ground are stacked to the left of the group. At center is a flag staff from which a US flag is fluttering.

Across the bottom of the image in period pencil are the names of the soldiers pictured. Left to right they are named as SLADE, BRIGHT, GIBSON, HOWLAND, STURGES, BROWN and BOARDMAN. The men lying on the ground from left to right are SUTTER, BAKER and PERKINS. The officer seated at center is identified as BUTTNER or BETTIS???

Image is very clear with excellent contrast. It comes in a modern wood frame painted gold that meas. approx. 14.75 x 12.25 inches and is in good condition. The white mat is cut so the title of the image can be seen. There is some dark smudging or discolorations around the text of the title.  [ad]
