Here is a Civil War era CDV album that contains not only family images, but also an extensive collection of Confederate generals and officers in uniform. Included are Fitzhugh Lee, Kirby Smith, Jeb Stuart, James Longstreet, Bradley T. Johnson, Wade Hampton, Benjamin Cheatham, Joseph Johnston, John C. Breckenridge, Sterling Price, Leonidas Polk, P.G.T. Beauregard, John Mosby, Raphael Semmes, and Harry Gilmore. Names are hand inscribed in period ink under each image. Images of a man and woman are incorrectly labeled as “Jefferson Davis, President” and, “Mrs. Jeff Davis”.
Album contains 39 images. There is space for 50 images. The family images are mostly of individual men and women, plus two babies and one couple together. Men are in civilian attire. Backmarks checked are from Virginia.
CDV album has brown leather cover with embossed design on the front and back. Leather is in very good condition, with some light wear all over, but especially on the spine, edges and corners. Spine is embossed in gold with, “PHOTOGRAPHS”.
Album has a printed lining on inside of front and back covers. All pages are present and intact. There is a title page labeled, “THE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM / PHILADELPHIA. W.W. HARDING, 326 CHESNUT ST.” Index page has no writing. The edges of the pages are gold gilt which has retained its brightness. The album closes with two decorative gold colored metal clasps which are still firmly attached.
Album measures approx. 5 ¼” x 6 ¼” x 3”.
This is a great album for a collector of Civil War era civilian or Confederate images. [sl]
