Image is a chest-up view of George Dickerman wearing a dark colored civilian frock coat and vest, white shirt and tie. Bottom of mount is marked with the hand inscription, “GEO. M. DICKERMAN, CAPT CO A, 26 MASS; CAPT A 6TH MASS”.

Card measures 6 ½” x 6 ¼”. Image is clear, but has yellowed with age. Surface dirt and spotting is present.

George M. Dickerman was a resident of Lowell, MA where he worked as a machinist. He enlisted at the age of 25 on April 15, 1861 as a Sergeant and on April 22 was mustered into Co. “A”, 6th MA Infantry. He was present at the Baltimore Riots. On May 18, 1861 he was promoted to Captain. He was mustered out on August 2, 1861 at Boston. On October 18, 1861 he mustered into Co. “A”, 26th MA Infantry. He was promoted to Captain on October 18, 1861. He is listed as a POW on September 19, 1864 at Winchester, Virginia, was confined at Libby Prison, then was exchanged on February 23, 1865. He was mustered out on April 13, 1865. After the war, Dickerman lived in Lowell, MA and was a member of the G.A.R. Post #185 (Ladd & Whitney). He died in 1925 and is buried in Lowell Cemetery.  [sm]
