This wonderful little group of three images shows the same soldier in two different poses.

The first image is on an off-white mount that meas. approx. 5.25 x 7.25 inches. The image itself is 4.25 x 6.00 inches. The image is a full standing view of a soldier wearing a dark 1881 spiked helmet with spread-winged eagle with a US shield and crossed rifles on its chest on the front, a dark frock coat with a light armband with a dark cross over 1st Sergeant chevrons on each sleeve and service stripes on each cuff. The subject also wears light trousers and a waist belt with a rectangular plate that reads “MASS.” The 1st Sergeant holds his sword are “SHOULDER ARMS” while the scabbard is attached to the left side of his belt by a leather frog.

Image is clear with good contrast with some light scattered surface dirt. Bottom of mount is embossed with “W. J. FREEMAN STUDIO, KILDRETH BUILDING, LOWELL, MASS. Reverse is blank.

The second image is of the same soldier in the same uniform but he is posed with the sword at the position of “PRESENT ARMS” and he is slightly turned to his right and the camera is closer in showing him only from mid-thigh up. This view provides a closer inspection of the sleeve insignia and the belt plate.

Again, this image is clear with good contrast. It has the same mount as the first with the same markings.

The third image in the group is identical to the first image in content but is smaller in size meas. approx. 4.25 x 6.50 on the mount and 3 7/8 x 5.50 inches. Mount has same photographer’s imprint and light scattered surface dirt.

We rarely encounter groups of images of the same soldier and allow a real close view of his uniform and insignia.  [ad]
