Image shows Frank Chickering of Company B. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and dark tie with white polka-dots. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and Company.

Image has good clarity and contrast.

Reverse has photographer’s mark for W. WYKES…GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN. Period ink label at bottom reads “FRANK CHICKERING 257 MADISON AVE. GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN,  CO. B, 2ND REGT N. H. VOLS.”

Frank Chickering was born in Milford, New Hampshire on April 20, 1840. He enlisted as a Private in Company B, 2nd New Hampshire on August 18, 1862. He was wounded to an undetermined degree at Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864. Chickering was promoted Corporal on July 1, 1864 and to Sergeant December 16, 1864. He was mustered out at Manchester, Virginia on June 9, 1865.

After the war Chickering moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he died July 10, 1927. He is buried there in Oakhill Cemetery.

The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  [ad]
