Image shows the National colors of the 14TH New Hampshire Infantry which served in the eastern and southern theater of war with the 22nd and 19th Corps.
The colors are displayed on the staff with the latter going diagonally across the image. The spear shaped finial is visible at top and close observation reveals that the staff runs through a sleeve on the hoist end of the color. Also present are the two tassels just below the finial.
The flag is spread out to reveal battle and wind damage such as tears and missing material. Clearly visible on one of the white stripes is “14th NEW H…” while on alternating white stripes below it are “OPEQUAN SEPT.,” “FISHERS HILL…PT 22, 18…,” “CEDAR CREEK OCT. 19TH 18…”
Image is clear and bright with good contrast. Mount edges are clean. Upper corners are clipped. Bottom of mount has printed caption that reads “FOURTEENTH N.H. VOL. INFANTRY.” With 1865 publishing information.
Reverse has photographer’s mark that reads KIMBALL & SONS…CONCORD, N.H. There is also some collector information in pencil.
The 14th New Hampshire was organized on September 16, 1862 for three years. The regiment saw action at Winchester, Opequan, Fisher’s Hill, skirmish at New Market, Va., and Cedar Creek.
During its service the regiment lost approx. 12 officers and 220 men killed died of wounds or disease with another 167 wounded and captured.
The regiment was mustered out on July 8, 1865.
