Image shows the National Colors of the 96th Illinois Infantry which served in the western theater of war with the 4th and 16th Corps.

The colors are displayed on the staff with the latter going diagonally across the image. The spear shaped finial is visible at top and close observation reveals that the staff runs through a sleeve on the hoist end of the color. Also present ar the two tassels just below the finial.

The flag is spread out to reveal battle and wind damage such as tears and missing material. Clearly visible on one of the red stripes is “96th” while on a stipe below it “CHICKA” of Chickamauga can be seen.

Image is clear with good contrast. Mount edges are clean.

Reverse has photographer’s mark that reads J.H. & C.L. PORTER…WAUKEGAN, ILL. There is also some collector information in pencil.

The 96th Illinois was organized on September 6, 1862 for three years. The regiment saw action at Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Dalton, Rocky Faced Ridge, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, Altoona, Franklin and Nashville.

During its service the regiment lost approx. 6 officers and 234 men killed died of wounds or disease with another 209 wounded and captured.

The regiment was mustered out on June 10, 1865.
