Image shows the National colors of the 76th Ohio Infantry which served in the western theater of war with the 13th and 15th Corps.
The colors are displayed on the staff with the latter going diagonally across the image. The spear shaped finial is visible at top and close observation reveals that it is leaning against a wire which is holding the flag in place. The flag is attached to the staff by a sleeve on the hoist end of the color. Also present are the two tassels just below the finial.
The flag is spread out to reveal battle and wind damage such as tears and missing material. The entire canton is gone. One of the red stripes bears the painted inscription “76th.”
Also suspended from the wire which supports the flag are an officer’s waist belt, scabbard and a drawn sword. To the left of the belt is a sash. Displayed on the floor on either side of the flag are two framed images of officers of the regiment. One is Colonel Charles R. Woods and the other is Colonel William B. Woods. Both men ended the war as Generals.
Image is clear with good contrast. Mount edges are clean.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint of Z. P. McMILLEN…. NEWARK, OHIO there is also some collector information in pencil.
The 76th Ohio was organized on February 6, 1862 for three years. The regiment saw action at Shiloh, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Ringgold, Resaca, Dallas, Big Shanty, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lovejoy Station and Bentonville.
