This is a very unique image of General Robert E. Lee’s office while he was President at Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. It was produced by the famous photographer Michael Miley, who took many of the post- war photos of Lee. Lee was offered many positions after the war, and decided on the Presidency of the College as it was a way to educate the young men of Virginia and help to rebuild the South. After Lee’s death, the name was changed to Washington and Lee University, and Lee’s office was left untouched, exactly as he left it.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint, “M. MILEY LEXINGTON, VA.”. Lower left corner on image has, “M. MILEY”.

Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age. [sm]
