Item Code: 697-711

CDV is a three-quarter standing view of 2nd Lt. Leroy Mayne. He is posed in front of a painted backdrop of a river scene and leans against a raised column. He wears a dark frock coat open at the collar with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps. At his waist is his sword belt with rectangular eagle belt plate. Attached to the belt is a Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword. With his right hand he supports his light colored slouch hat with plume, hat cord and crossed sabers on a dark oval background. Image is clear with good contrast. There are some scattered small spots and scratches but these appear to have been on the negative.

Reverse is blank except for pencil inscription that reads “LEROY MAYNE ADJ. IN MARINE SERVICE.  LOANED BY MRS. J. HORR.” The inscription is in a more modern hand than the Civil War period. The ID is confirmed by online research.

Leroy Mayne enlisted as a Private in Company F, 2nd Iowa Infantry on May 1, 1861. His discharge from the 2nd Iowa is not known but on September 30, 1861 he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 3rd Iowa Cavalry. Companies E, F, G, and H of the 3rd were sent to Jefferson City, Missouri where it did guard duty.

On March 30, 1863 Mayne was discharged for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in the Mississippi Marine Brigade. This Brigade was attached to the Regular Army and served as Marines onboard ships of the Mississippi River Squadron. This Marine Brigade consisted of 350 officers and men from all three branches, Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry.

Mayne was discharged at some point but no date is given. His information is sketchy and pulling his records from the National Archives may very well reveal some interesting in formation.
