$225.00 SOLD

Item Code: 697-665

CDV is a very nice three-quarter standing view of Lieutenant Robert Hamilton leaning against a curtained pillar. He wears a forage cap with an infantry hunting horn insignia on the front with a numeral “1” at center, a dark frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps and light trousers. At his waist is his sword belt with rectangular eagle plate, sash and attached to his belt a Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword. It should be pointed out that the numeral “1” on his cap is for the 1st Battalion Massachusetts Infantry which later became the 32nd Infantry.

Image is very clear with great contrast. Mount and paper are very clean but all four of the mount corners have been clipped. ID is confirmed by internet image.

Reverse has collector’s information in pencil and a photographer’s imprint for F. L. LAY…BOSTON.

Robert Hamilton was a 26 year old Machinist when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company C, 32nd Massachusetts Infantry on October 25, 1861. The regiment did not reach the Army of the Potomac’s 5th Corps till just after 2nd Bull Run. The regiment was present for the Maryland Campaign but was not engaged. Their first experience in battle was at Fredericksburg in December of 1862. By this time Hamilton had been promoted to 1st Lieutenant. The 32nd then went on to serve at Chancellorsville and were heavily involved in the fighting on July 2nd at Gettysburg. In the late summer of 1863 Hamilton was promoted to Captain of Company A. He led them through the Wilderness and Spotsylvania but at Laurel Hill on May 12, 1864 Captain Hamilton was severely wounded. He died in Boston and is buried in Oak Cliff Cemetery in Derby, Connecticut. There is some debate as to his date of death. The records say he died on July 4, 1864 but his gravestone says June 24, 1864.
