Three-quarter standing view of Joseph E. Fiske posed with his arms folded across his chest. Fiske wears a dark frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps and a sword belt with a non-regulation Foot Officer’s sword attached.

The image is very bright and clear with great contrast. The mount and paper do have some light surface dirt but nothing serious. Reverse has photographer’s imprint for WARREN…CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASS. There is a period ink inscription running along one side of the reverse that reads “CAPT. FISKE.” Across the top of the reverse is collector information in pencil and black marker.

Joseph Emery Fiske was born October 23, 1839. He was listed as a 22 year old student when he joined Company C, 43rd Massachusetts Infantry as a Sergeant on September 24, 1862. The regiment was sent to North Carolina where Fiske was promoted to 1st Sergeant on November 24, 1862. The 43rd saw action at Whitehall, Goldsboro and Little Washington during its term of service. Fiske was discharged for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in Company B. 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on May 29, 1863.

Lieutenant Fiske served with the 2nd throughout the rest of the war. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 30, 1863 and to Captain of Company H on October 9, 1863.
