The reverse has photographer’s imprint for J. W. BLACK…BOSTON along with some collector’s information in pencil. The identification is confirmed by numerous on-line images.
Thomas Greely Stevenson was born in Boston in 1836. He was only 25 years old when he was commissioned Colonel of the 24th Massachusetts Infantry on August 31, 1861. The regiment was assigned to Burnsides’ North Carolina Expedition where it was engaged at Roanoke and Newbern in early 1862. Throughout the summer and into the fall it was engaged at Little Washington, Tranter’s Creek, Rawle’s Mill, Batchelder’s Creek and Whitehall.
On December 26, 1862 Colonel Stevenson was discharged for promotion to Brigadier General.
In early 1863 when General Foster organized an expedition against Charleston, Stevenson was given a Brigade in General Naglee’s Division. He spent most of 1863 in action against Charleston at Morris Island including the assault on Fort Wagner.
In 1864 he was assigned to command of the 1st Division of the 9th Corps. He was killed in action at Spotsylvania on May 10, 1864.
He was buried in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Arlington, Massachusetts.
