Full standing view of Lawrence in the uniform of a Union officer. He wears a dark nine-button shell jacket with shoulder straps and matching dark trousers with thin, light colored leg stripe and knee-high boots. On his head he wears an officers forage cap with a barely discernible “US” in a wreath. He also wears his sword belt with rectangular plate, cross strap and sword. In his hand he carries a pair of gauntlets. Image is clear but contrast is a bit light. All details are discernable. Upper mount corners are clipped. Back has bold period ink signature that reads “C. H. LAWRENCE, A. A. GENERAL, U.S.” Reverse also has photographers imprint for “ADDIS… WASHINGTON, D.C.” with some collector information in pencil. Image comes with a paper copy of a similar photograph.

Center Houghton Lawrence was 5th Sergeant in Company A, 2nd New Hampshire Volunteers and the first color-bearer of the regiment. He was promoted to Sergeant-Major on August 21, 1861 and to 1st Lieutenant & Adjutant October 26, 1861. He served in that capacity through the Peninsula Campaign and Second Manassas. Lawrence was discharged for promotion on October 7, 1862. The same day he was appointed Captain in the Assistant Adjutant Generals Department. He was wounded in the left thigh at Petersburg in July of 1864. In March of 1865 he received a promotion to Major by Brevet. He resigned on June 22, 1865.  After the war he practiced law in Maryland and Washington D. C.
