The coat is open to reveal a matching dark military vest and light trousers with a dark NCO leg stripe and knee high boots. The image is very clear and clean with great contrast.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for D. W. BOWDIN… SALEM. There is also some collector information in pencil. Written very small in the upper right corner in period ink is “W. MUNSEY.”

William B. E. Munsey was an 18 year old farmer from Fall River when he enlisted in Company G 23^rd Massachusetts Infantry on September 19, 1861. The 23^rd was sent to North Carolina where it was engaged at Roanoke Island, Newbern, Goldsboro, Kinston and Whitehall. In January of 1863 the regiment moved to Charleston. In October 1863 the 23^rd moved to Newport News, Virginia where in December Munsey re-enlisted and was promoted to Sergeant on December 2^nd. The regiment was engaged at Smithfield, Port Walthall Junction and Drewry’s Bluff where Munsey was captured on May 16, 1864. He was exchanged on December 19, 1864. During his absence he was promoted to 1^st Lieutenant on October 14, 1864. He was mustered out on June 25, 1865.
