Bust view shows a young 2nd Lieutenant wearing a dark frock coat and vest. The image is in the center of a frame that is printed right on the card. Just visible inside the frame is one 2nd Lieutenant’s shoulder strap. Image is clear with good contrast.
The reverse is signed twice, once in thin ink and again in thick ink. The thin ink inscription reads “RESPECTFULLY YOURS H. E. COLEMAN “B” CO. 42ND WISCONSIN.” The thicker ink inscription is not as clear but it reads “RESPECTFULLY YOURS H. E. COLEMAN “B” CO. 42ND WIS.” The reverse also has a blue 2 cent tax stamp.
Harvey E. Coleman was living in Oak Grove, Wisconsin when he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 29th Wisconsin on August 21, 1862. He was discharged for promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 42nd Wisconsin on July 29, 1864. He was mustered out on June 20, 1865. During his time with the 29th the regiment saw action at Helena, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg, Jackson and Sabine Crossroads. While with the 42nd he did garrison duty.
