Image is a wartime bust view of Johnston in uniform. The image is clear and clean with good contrast. Reverse has a period pencils inscription that reads “A. S. JOHNSTON.” There is also some light collector information in pencil.

Albert S. Johnston was born February 2, 1803 in Washington, Kentucky. He graduated 8th in the West Point Class of 1826 and was appointed to the 2nd US Infantry. He resigned in commission in 1834 and took up farming in Texas. Johnston served as a general in three different armies: the Texan (i.e., Republic of Texas) Army, the United States Army, and the Confederate States Army. He saw extensive combat during his military career, fighting actions in the Texas War of Independence, the Mexican War, the Utah War, and the American Civil War.

Considered by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to be the finest (and the second-highest ranking) general officer in the Confederacy before the emergence of Robert E. Lee, he was killed early in war at the Battle of Shiloh and was the highest-ranking officer, Union or Confederate, killed during the entire war. Confederate President Davis believed the loss of Johnston "was the turning point of our fate.”
