The image shows a young Zouave posed in front of a painted backdrop of a military camp with Sibley tents, wall tents, a fort on a hill and flagpole with US flag. The subject wears a fez with a large tassel attached. The tassel can be seen resting on his shoulder. He also wears a light colored jacket with dark piping and tombeau, a vest with a single, wide dark stripe down the center and a dark sash. Also visible is the brass mat of the tintype being copied. This was often done when a soldier died or was killed. Family members and friends would want photos and the only way to make them was to copy an existing image. The paper and the mount of this CDV are in good shape. There is some light surface dirt along the edges of the mount. The back mark is Charles Goodman, Bainbridge, New York. Back also has an orange revenue stamp with numerous inked lines over the face. Older, but not wartime, pencil ID on back reads “Robert Graves.”

Robert Turner Graves was born April 5, 1844 in Masonville, Delaware County, New York. He enlisted at Norwich as a Private in Company F, 146th New York Infantry on September 4, 1863. He was killed in action at the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864. He is buried in Whitman Cemetery, Masonville, New York.

Bainbridge, New York, where the CDV was made, is very close to Norwich where Graves enlisted and Masonville where Graves lived and is buried.

The 146th New York was with the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac throughout its service. May 5th 1864 saw the worst loss in the history of the regiment. The casualties for that day were 20 killed, 67 wounded and 225 missing or captured. Image is from the collection of the late John Henry Kurtz.
