Bust view in uniform of John M. Barker of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. Image is a vignette and only the top three buttons and the edge of his shoulder straps are visible. The image is clear with good contrast and all the features of the subjects face are clear.

Reverse has period ink inscription that reads “COMPLIMENTS, J.M. BARKER. CAPT. 3RD R.I.A.”

John M. Barker enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D, 1st Rhode Island Infantry in Providence April 17, 1861. He served for three months and saw action at 1st Bull Run. He was mustered out on August 2, 1861.

Barker’s next service began on February 3, 1862 when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Battery D of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. The battery was assigned to the Department of the South and served most of its time in South Carolina mostly involved with the siege of Charleston. While with the regiment Barker received three promotions. He made 1st Lieutenant on November 28, 1862, Captain on December 30, 1863 and Major on July 25, 1865. During its service the regiment lost 140 men and served in 49 battles and skirmishes to include Fort Pulaski, James Island, Morris Island, Folly Island, Fort Wagner, Olustee and Gainesville.

Sometime after the war Barker moved to Massachusetts where he died on March 17, 1898. Today he rests in Norton Common Cemetery in Norton, Massachusetts.
