Nice CDV of Quartermaster Sergeant Noah D. Smith of Company H, 56th New York Infantry. Smith is posed seated with his hands resting in his lap. Behind him is a painted backdrop of a lake scene. Smith wears a dark frock coat with Quartermaster Sergeant chevrons on each sleeve. He also wears matching dark trousers with a wide light colored NCO leg stripe.

The image is clear and clean and the contrast is good. Bottom of mount is signed in period ink “YOURS, NOAH D. SMITH.”

Reverse of mount is blank.

Noah D. Smith was 18 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company H, of the 56th New York Infantry on September 14, 1861. The regiment was assigned to the 4th Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw action on the Peninsula being engaged at Bottom’s Bridge and Fair Oaks.

In December of 1862 the Brigade to which the 56th was attached was transferred to the Department of the South in South Carolina. In February of 1863 Private Smith was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant, a position he held till the end of the war. Smith also became a re-enlisted veteran on February 4, 1864. While in South Carolina the 56th was engaged at John’s Island, Honey Hill, numerous engagements at Deveaux Neck, Dingles Mill and Holly Run. In total the regiment lost approx. 335 men to all causes.

Noah D. Smith was mustered out at Charleston, South Carolina on October 17, 1865. At some point Smith moved to Florida where he was living when he filed for a pension in 1896. He died on December 28, 1922 and is buried in Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa, Florida.
