Elisha Marshall was born January 26, 1829 in Seneca Falls, New York. He graduated from West Point in 1850 and served in the Utah War as a First Lieutenant. He also fought in the Battle of the Colorado River in 1859 during the Mohave War in Arizona.

When the Civil War began Marshall was a Captain in the Regular Army but on April 1, 1862 he accept the Colonelcy of the 13th New York Infantry. The regiment was present at 1st Bull Run and was later assigned to the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Sometime in May of 1862 the regiment was transferred to the 5th Corps. It fought on the Peninsula at Yorktown, Hanover Court House, Gaines’ Mill, Meadow Bridge, Savage’s Station and Malvern Hill. The regiment also took part in in 2nd Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg where Colonel Marshall was wounded. Marshall was mustered out with his regiment after the battle of Chancellorsville on May 13, 1863.

Marshall’s next service was as Colonel of the 14th New York Heavy Artillery. Marshall was mustered in on April 4, 1864. His regiment was assigned to the 9th Corps where it served as infantry being engaged at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church and Petersburg where Marshall was again wounded on June 17, 1864. A little more than a month later Colonel Marshall was captured on July 30, 1864 during the battle of the Crater. He was confined at Macon, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina before being paroled at Camp Asylum, Columbia, South Carolina on December 9, 1864.

On March 13, 1865 Marshall was given two brevet promotions to Brigadier and Major General for his services throughout the war. After the war Marshall reverted to the Regular Army rank of Major and retired as a Colonel in 1867.

He died in Canandaigua, New York on January 26, 1883 and was buried in Rochester's Mount Hope Cemetery.

In June, 2000 Marshall's grave was broken into, his skull was stolen, and his remains were scattered around his grave. The perpetrators were not caught, and Marshall's remains, minus the skull, were reinterred.
