Image shows Major Samuel McConihe from the chest up in the up. He wears a double-breasted frock coat with Major’s shoulder straps. The image is clear with good contrast. There is some light surface dirt on the image and a dark stain to one side of the Major’s face. This stain does not touch the subject.

The reverse of the image has a photographer’s imprint for R. W. ADDIS… WASHINGTON, D.C. There is also a period ink inscription on the top of the reverse that reads “SAMUEL McCONIHE, MAJOR 93d N.Y.V. MARCH 20th ’64.” There is also some collector information at bottom in pencil.

Samuel McConihe was born in Troy, New York on September 8, 1836. He was commissioned a Captain in Company K of the 93rd New York on January 17, 1862 having originally enlisted the previous November. At the time of his enlistment McConihe was 25 years old.

The 93rd was assigned to the 4th Corps of the Army of the Potomac and served through the Peninsula Campaign where they saw action at Lee’s Mills, Yorktown, Fair Oaks and Savage’s Station. At this point the regiment was assigned to serve as Provost Guard for the Army of the Potomac. Though they were present for all the Army’s campaigns they were not engaged. During this time Captain McConihe was promoted to Major on November 30, 1863.

The 93rd was reassigned to the 2nd Corps in March of 1864 and was present throughout the 1864 Overland Campaign being engaged at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Laurel Hill, North Anna River, Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor and Petersburg where Major McConihe was discharged on February 15, 1865. On the following March 13 he was promoted to Brigadier General by brevet.

He returned to Troy after the war and died there on September 9, 1897. He was buried there in Oakwood Cemetery.
