Image shows Kearny looking to his right and is a good clear shot of his face in profile. He wears a double-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps of a Brigadier General. Mount and image are clean. Reverse has photographer’s back mark for R. W. ADDIS… WASHINGTON D.C. Light pencil inscription on top back reads “PHIL KEARNY.”

Phil Kearny was born in New York City on June 2, 1815. Kearny’s first assignment was as a Lieutenant in the 1st Dragoons in 1837. He went on to the French Cavalry School at Saumur and saw action with the French Army in Algiers. He served on General Scott’s staff and during the war with Mexico his company of Dragoons served as Scott’s escort. It was during this time, at the battle of Churubusco, he lost his left arm. In 1859 he served with the French Army in Italy and returned to the United States when the Civil War broke out. He was made a Brigadier General of Volunteers and commanded a Brigade of New Jersey troops. During the Peninsular campaign he rose to command a Division in the III Corps and was promoted to Major General on July, 4, 1862. He was killed in action at Chantilly, Va. on September 1, 1862.
