Image shows Edward H. Underhill in the uniform of a 2nd Lieutenant. The subject wears a dark frock coat with turned down black velvet collar and 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps. On his head is an officer’s kepi with crossed cannons surmounted by the numeral “1” on the front.

Below the image is a very bold ink signature that reads “E.H. UNDERHILL / 1st N.Y.A.”

The image is clear with good contrast. Paper and mount have some light surface dirt.

Reverse is blank.

Edward H. Underhill enlisted at Elmira, New York as a Private in Battery E, 1st New York Light Artillery on October 23, 1861. At the time of his enlistment Underhill was 24 years old. Almost immediately upon being mustered in Underhill was appointed Commissary Sergeant and on January 24, 1862 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. The following May the battery saw action at the Battle of Williamsburg on the Peninsula.

On October 15, 1862 Underhill was detached from his unit and sent to the 3rd New York Light Artillery with whom he remained until May 15, 1863 when he was transferred to Battery B, 1st New York Artillery. While with the 3rd he received a promotion to 1st Lieutenant on April 13, 1863.

As a 1st Lieutenant in Battery B Underhill saw action at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor and Weldon Railroad.

Another transfer came to Underhill on October 18, 1864 when he was promoted Captain of Battery M, 1st New York Light Artillery which he led at Bentonville, North Carolina.

He was finally mustered out at Rochester, New York on June 23, 1865.
