Image shows Lieutenant Frederick Elliott leaning against a column. He wears a dark frock coat with 2^nd Lieutenant’s shoulder straps. The coat is open to show a matching dark military vest underneath. He also wears light trousers with a thin dark leg stripe that is correct for an officer.

Image has faded just a bit but it has good contrast. There is also light surface dirt and some chipping to the upper left corner of the paper. The bottom of the mount has a period pencil inscription that reads “FRED ELLIOTT.”

The reverse has a back mark of Columbia seated leaning against a patriotic shield. There is no photographer’s name or address.

Frederick Elliott (listed as Elliot in the records) was 23 years old when he enlisted at Bath, Maine as a Corporal in Company A, 3^rd Maine Infantry on June 4, 1861. Two months later on August 3, 1861 he was commissioned a 2^nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company I. He was dismissed on August 19, 1863. During his time of service the regiment saw action at 1^st Bull Run and on the Peninsula at Fair Oaks and Malvern Hill.

No reason for dismissal could be found on the Internet so pulling the records from the National Archives might reveal an interesting story.
