ID’D FULL STANDING CDV OF A WOMAN IN A HAND COLORED DRESS - BUFFALO, NEW YORK

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: P13450

Nice clear image of a woman identified as Emma Bartlett wearing a light blue dress with three horizontal white stripes at bottom. She also has a white collar with a red bowtie and a white and red stripped ribbon tied in a bow and pinned to her left sleeve. She also wears a white apron with a red border.

On her head Miss Bartlett wears a white lace headpiece with a red bow at front.

She is posed with her right hand resting on a small, short balustrade and her left resting on her hip. On top of the balustrade is some kind of a ribbon arrangement that is tinted red and blue.

Written on the image in pencil in a childish scrawl is “EMMA B????” The image is clear with good contrast but does have a crease running from the top edge just to the right of the subjects head. There is also light surface dirt to the paper and mount from age and storage.

The reverse has a period ink inscription that reads “EMMA BARTLETT / BUFFALO N.Y. / BAZAR COSTUME” Below this is a photographer’s imprint for G. A. DOUGLASS & CO. BUFFALO, N.Y. There are also the scrawled initials “D.F.E.” in pencil.

The 1860 census shows several women named Emma Bartlett living in upstate New York with one living in Buffalo who was born around 1827 which would put her in her 30’s during the Civil War.

It is possible that Emma is a volunteer nurse but it is hard to tell for sure. This image came with one of another woman dressed somewhat similarly with the same photographer’s mark but no ID. There was a Soldier’s Bazaar held in Buffalo during the war and Miss Bartlett may have worked the event as a staff member.
