TINTYPE BUST VIEW OF 4TH VERMONT SOLDIER WOUNDED AT PETERSBURG

This gem-sized tintype comes housed in a paper CDV sized frame. Image is of Corporal Stephen Berry who wears an enlisted man’s kepi and dark frock coat with a 6th Corps badge on his chest. Berry is posed in front of a painted backdrop of a camp scene with a flying US flag on a pole. The image is clean with good contrast and only light surface dirt. The bottom of the mount has a period ink inscription that reads “CORPL. STEPHEN BERRY, CO. D, 4TH VT. VOLS, WASHINGTON, D.C.”

The reverse has another period ink inscription along the top edge that reads “CORPL. STEPHEN BERRY, CO. D, 4TH VT. VOLS.”

Stephen Berry was born on March 15, 1839 in Sheffield, Vermont. He enlisted at Glover as a Private in Company D, 4th Vermont Infantry on August 23, 1861. As far as is known he was with the regiment throughout its service and re-enlisted on December 15, 1863. He was promoted to Corporal the following May and was severely wounded in the right arm at Petersburg on March 25, 1865. He was sent to Sloan Hospital in Montpelier, Vermont on April 14, 1865.He was discharged due to wounds on June 27, 1865.

He died on December 27, 1911 and is buried in Village Cemetery, Sutton, Vermont.

This is a nice little image of a fellow who saw his share of fighting throughout the war.
