This CDV is a vignette bust view of Private William H. Petrie in civilian clothes. He wears a dark suit with a white shirt. The image is clean with good contrast and only very little surface dirt. The bottom edge of the image has a wonderful bold period ink autograph that reads “HENRY PETRIE, CO. K, 4TH VT. VOLS.”

The reverse has a photographer’s imprint for H. CUSHING… WINDSOR, VT.

William Henry Petrie was born in 1841. He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 4th Vermont Infantry at Hartland on September 2, 1861. While Petrie was with the regiment it saw action at Lee’s Mills, Savage’s Station, White Oak Swamp, South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. On January 31, 1863 Petrie was discharged for disability.

On September 12, 1864 Petrie enlisted again as a Private in Company H, 2nd U.S.S.S. He was with the regiment during the Petersburg Campaign and transferred back to his old regiment on February 25, 1865 and was mustered out on June 19th of that year.

He died on December 16, 1908 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rutland, Vermont.
