Image is of Sergeant Carlton Green of Company E, 4th Vermont Infantry. Green wears a dark frock coat with Corporal chevrons, Veteran’s stripe on the lower sleeve and a small 6th Corps badge on his chest. He also wears a light colored vest and matching trousers with dark NCO leg stripe.
Image is very clean and clear but has clipped corners. Contrast is excellent.
Reverse of the image as a period pencil inscription at top that reads “CORPL. CARLETON GREEN, CO. E, 4TH REGT. VT. VOLS.” There is also a photographer’s imprint for E. E. AUSTIN, BETHEL, VERMONT.
Carlton Green was born in 1845. He was 18 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company E, of the 4th Vermont at Bethel on September 3, 1861. Records show that Green became a reenlisted veteran on March 25, 1864 and a Corporal on April 29th that same year. He made Sergeant the following September. Sadly, Sergeant Green was killed by bullet wound to his abdomen after being shot by a civilian on the march from Danville to Manchester, Virginia on May 17, 1865. He was buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Bethel, Vermont. There are no details available about the incident. Perhaps pulling his records from the National Archives may reveal an interesting story.
