This CDV is a vignette bust view of D. Jewett Ryther who served in Company F, 4th Vermont Infantry.

The image is clear with good contrast and shows Ryther in a dark civilian suit with a white shirt and dark bow-tie. Just below the image to the left is a large rectangular block of ink. It does not look like a spill but more like something was written and then blocked out. The mount is mostly clean and has an “F” in the lower left corner and a “G” in the lower right.

The reverse of the image has a period ink inscription over pencil that reads “ ?? RYTHER, CO. F, 4TH VT. VOLS.” The first name is difficult to read but we now know it to be Daniel. There is a photographer’s imprint for FARIS & GRAY… NEW YORK.

Daniel Jewett Ryther was born June 5, 1841. He enlisted as a Corporal in Brattleboro, Vermont on August 30, 1861. He served throughout the regiment’s service until he was mustered out at the expiration of his term of service on September 30, 1864. He died of disease contracted during the war on September 24, 1865. He is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Brattleboro, Vermont.
