Very nice clear clean bright bust view of Charles Dam of Company C, 4th Vermont Infantry.

Image shows a very young looking man with carefully combed hair in a dark frock coat with only the top button fastened.

Image has excellent contrast but mount corners are clipped. Bottom of mount has photographers mark of SIMPSON, LOWELL.

Reverse has period pencil inscription that reads “SERGT. CHAS. DAMM CO. C, 4TH VT. VOLS.”

Charles Dam was born about 1845 in New Hampshire but is credited to Lowell, Massachusetts. He enlisted as a Corporal in the 4th Vermont on August 19, 1861 and was mustered in the following September 21st. He became a reenlisted veteran on December 15, 1863 and three days later was promoted to Sergeant. He was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, to what degree is unknown. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant on October 1, 1864 and received his second wound a little over two weeks later at Cedar Creek on the 19th of October. Again, the seriousness of the wound is not known. He was transferred to Company D on February 25, 1865 and was mustered out on July 13th of that same year.

After the war he lived in Lowell, Massachusetts. He died in Worcester on August 21, 1917.
