Bust view in uniform of Private Royal Austin. He is pictured wearing a dark frock coat buttoned only at the throat. The oat is open revealing a lighter colored military style vest underneath. Image is clear with good contrast and only some light surface dirt. The image is inside of a frame printed directly on to the mount. Mount corners are clipped.

The reverse has a pencil inscription at top that reads “AUSTIN, CO. I, 4TH VT. VOLS.”

Royal M. Austin was from Townshend, Vermont. He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 4th Vermont Infantry on August 18, 1862 and was mustered in the following September 30th. He was with his regiment until September 19, 1864 when he was wounded to an undetermined degree at the battle of 3rd Winchester. In February of 1865 he was transferred from Company I to Company F. He was mustered out on June 19, 1865.

After the war he returned to Townshend where he died on January 13, 1922 and is buried there in Oakwood Cemetery.
