CDV is a bust view of Private Syra Bennett of Company G, 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. Image shows Bennett from mid-chest up. He wears a dark frock coat with a military vest underneath and a white shirt with a dark bow-tie. He sports heavy sideburns and a mustache.

The image is clear and clean with great contrast. Reverse is signed in ink “SYRA BENNETT, GLASTONBURY, CONNECTICUT.”

Syra Bennett enlisted as a Private on May 22, 1861 and was mustered in the same day. The 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery started life as the 4th Connecticut Infantry but after 6 months was changed to heavy artillery in January of 1862. The regiment garrisoned Fort Richardson for some time but parts of it moved with the Army of the Potomac on all its campaigns. Bennett was discharged at the end of his term of service on May 21, 1864. He returned to Glastonbury where he lived out the rest of his life. He died on July 2, 1891 at the age of 56. He was laid to rest in Nipsic Cemetery in Glastonbury, Connecticut.
