CDV is a chest-up view of a Union soldier in uniform named John W. Kingman.  He is wearing a dark colored double-breasted jacket with shoulder boards.

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “BLACK & CASE, BOSTON & NEWPORT, RI”.  Imprint is partially obscured by a cut-out from an album page which has been glued onto the back of the image. This has a handwritten inscription which reads, “COL JOHN W. KINGMAN, MARRIED DANIEL M. CHRISTIE’S DAUG, BECAME US JUDGE IN WYOMING, COL OF 15TH N.H., STUDIED LAW“.  Also on the reverse is a handwritten inscription that reads, “ENL. 10-2-62 AS PVT 15TH NHV, APPT COL 10-7-62, MUST 10-28-62, M.O. 8-13-63, PORT HUDSON, LA CANYON”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

John W. Kingman was born in 1821 in Barrington, NH. At the time of the Civil War he was a resident of Durham, NH where he worked as a lawyer.  He enlisted on October 7, 1862 as a Colonel into the 15th NH Infantry. On October 28, 1862 he was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 15th NH Infantry. He was mustered out on August 13, 1863 at Concord, NH. After the war, he became an associate Supreme Court Justice of the Wyoming Territory. He died in Cedar Falls, IA, on December 17, 1903 and was buried in NH.
