CDV is a three-quarter view of a Union soldier in uniform named George Hicks.  He is wearing a dark colored frock coat with shoulder boards and light colored trousers.

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “HENRY ULKE, 278 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, WASHINGTON, D.C.”.  There is a handwritten inscription on the reverse which reads, “HICKS, GEORGE II, B. 10/3/40 TO UEL HICKS AND BETSY WALBRIDGE, YOUNGEST OF 5 (LIBBY #3), VT VOLUNTEERS, LIEUT WILLIAMS COLLEGE, SHOT BEFORE PETERSBURG JULY 30, 1864, S. AMERICA D. FEVER NOV. 17, 1868, QUATEMALA, SWEET LIBBY, A GOLD 4 READES PIECE WHICH SHE WORE ON HER WATCH CHAIN”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

George Hicks was a resident of Bennington, VT and enlisted on April 9, 1864 as a 1st Lieutenant. On April 17, 1864 he was commissioned into Co. “F” 17th VT Infantry. He was promoted to Captain by Brevet on July 6, 1864 at Shand’s House, Virginia. He was killed on July 30, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia, and is buried in Old Bennington Cemetery in Bennington, VT.
