CDV is a three-quarter standing view of a Union soldier in uniform named John Armstrong Foster.  He is wearing a dark colored, double-breasted frock coat with shoulder boards and dark colored trousers.

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “BRADY’S, NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT GALLERIES, BROADWAY & TENTH STREET, NEW YORK & `NO.352 PENNSYLVANIA AV. WASHINGTON D.C.”.  There is a handwritten inscription on the reverse which reads, “COMPLIMENTS OF JOHN A FOSTER, WASHINGTON FEB 24, 1864”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

John Armstrong Foster was born on March 5, 1833 in Schoharie County, NY. He enlisted on April 26, 1861 in New York City at 28 years old as a Private into Co. “F” 7th NY Infantry SM. He was mustered out on June 3, 1861 at New York, NY.  On November 19, 1862 he was commissioned into Field & Staff 175th NY Infantry where he was promoted to Lieut. Colonel. He was then promoted to a Colonel on June 14, 1863, and to a Brig-General on September 28, 1865 by Brevet. He was discharged on August 5, 1865. He died on February 11, 1890 in New York City.
