CDV is a three-quarter sitting view of a Union soldier in uniform named James Rowan O’Beirne.  He is wearing a dark colored double-breasted frock coat with shoulder boards and has light colored trousers.

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “ROCKWOOD & CO., PHOTOGRAPHERS, 839 BROADWAY, NEW YORK”.  There is a handwritten inscription on the reverse which reads, “TO COL GEO. A WODDWARD, 22 REGT VRC, VERY DEVOTEDLY YOURS, JAS. R. O’BEIRNE, MAJ. 22 REGT VRC, CAMP CHASE, CLEAVELAND OHIO, OCTOBER 1, 1863”.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

James Rowan O’Beirne was born on September 25, 1844 in Roscommon, Ballagh Co., Ireland. At the age of 28, on July 7, 1861 he enlisted in Washington D.C. as a 2nd Lieutenant and was commissioned into Co. “C”, 37th NY Infantry. On August 9, 1861 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, then to Captain on November 4, 1861. He is listed as wounded on May 3, 1863 in Chancellorsville, VA. He mustered out on June 22, 1863, On July 24, 1863 he was commissioned into the 22nd Veteran Reserve Corps where he was promoted to a Captain. He also received the following promotions: to Major on May 12, 1864, to Lt. Colonel by Brevet, Colonel by Brevet, and Brig-General by Brevet on September 26, 1865. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 31, 1862 at Fair Oaks, VA for gallantry maintained at the line of battle until ordered to fall back. He died on February 17, 1917 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, NY.
