CDV is a waist-up view of Confederate surgeon William S. Lawton. He is wearing a light colored frock coat with galloons on the sleeves. He is wearing a slouch hat and has a cigar in his mouth.
Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “PUBLISHED BY E. & H. T. ANTHONY, 501 BROADWAY, NEW YORK, MANUFACTURERS OF THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUMS”. Also on the reverse is a handwritten inscription at the top that reads, “BILL LAWSON” and one at the bottom which reads, “W. S. LAWSON, SURGEN”.
Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.
William S. Lawton enlisted as a surgeon at an unknown date. He served in the CS Medical Field & Staff. In February of 1863, Surgeon Lawton took charge of the CS government established hospital in Guyton, Georgia. He served in this capacity until the hospital was abandoned in December of 1864 when Sherman’s Federal Army approached. From May 1862 – December 1864 this hospital provided medical care, food, clothing and lodging for thousands of sick and wounded Confederate soldiers.
