CDV is a waist-up view of a Union soldier in uniform named Alonzo J. Brown.  He is wearing a dark colored jacket with shoulder boards.  There is a handwritten inscription at the bottom of the mount which reads, “HOW MUCH? ALONZO J. BROWN, 1ST R: 6 CO. 22 REGT V. R. C.”.

Reverse of image is marked with the photographer’s imprint, “SWAIN BROTHERS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, 26 AND 28 N. PENNSYLVANIA ST., FIRST DOOR SOUTH OF P. O., INDIANAPOLIS, DUPLICATES CAN BE HAD AT ANY TIME”.  Also on the reverse is a handwritten inscription that reads, “CAPT. 1ST KANSAS, GUY HAWKINS”. There is a green tax stamp present.

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present.

Alonzo J. Brown was a resident of Leavenworth, Kansas and enlisted on May 29, 1861 as a Private into Co. “G” 1st Kansas Infantry. He received the following promotions: Sergeant on May 29, 1861; 1st Sergeant on April 10, 1862; 2nd Lieutenant on July 30, 1862; 1st Lieutenant on May 25, 1863; and Captain on July 8, 1863 (after being transferred into Co. “H”). He resigned on March 21, 1864 to accept an appointment in the Veterans Reserve Corps. He is listed as wounded, but the date and place is not stated in the records.
