CDV is a waist-up view of a Union soldier in uniform named John C. Schmidt. He is wearing a dark double breasted frock coat. Bottom of mount is marked with a hand written inscription that reads, “MAJ. JOHN C. SCHMIDT. 2ND INFY”.

Reverse of image is stamped with the photographer’s imprint, “WILLIAM SHEW, 423 MONTGOMERY STREET, SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.”

Image is clear with good contrast. Some light surface dirt is present on edges.

John C. Schmidt enlisted on September 5, 1861 at San Francisco as a captain in Co. “B”, 2nd CA Infantry. He was promoted to a Captain on September 4, 1864 when he reenlisted, and as a Major on December 4, 1864. He mustered out on April 19, 1866.
