Image shows soldier posed by a column wearing a dark commercially manufactured sack coat with matching dark trousers. His coat is buttoned only at the top exposing a white shirt underneath. Coat has a left breast pocket in which a small book or handkerchief is stuffed. The soldier’s right hand rests on the column next to his forage cap while with his left hand he leans on a cane.

Image is very clean and clear. There is a period ink inscription on the bottom edge of the mount that reads “CARRIE FROM AUSTIN.”

Reverse is blank except for a collector ID at top and a photographer’s imprint at bottom that reads BIERSTADT BROTHERS PHOTOGRAPHY, NEW BEDFORD, MASS.”

Image is attributed to be of Austin J. White of Company C, 35th Massachusetts. White was a 32 year old printer living in Chelsea when he enlisted as a Corporal on August 10, 1862. The regiment served with the 9th Corps and saw action at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Jackson, Knoxville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

During his service White was promoted to Sergeant Major on September 13, 1863 and commissioned 1st Lieutenant on January 14, 1864 and eventually Captain on September 6, 1864. White was wounded at Petersburg on July 30, 1864 and again on August 19, 1864 at Weldon Railroad and died of his wounds on September 15, 1864.

This image may have been taken while White was trying to recover from his wounds and not long before he died.

The attributed ID seems to be supported by an on-line image in which White has shorter hair and beard. A copy of this image comes with the item.
