David N. Jeffrey was born November 31, 1831 in Salem, Massachusetts. He was residing in South Danvers and working as a tanner when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company A, 5th Massachusetts Infantry on April 16, 1861.  He served with his regiment in the 1st Battle of Bull Run where it lost 60 men killed, wounded and captured. Jeffrey was mustered out July 31, 1861.

Jeffrey next enlisted as a Sergeant in the 2nd Company, Massachusetts Sharpshooters on September 18, 1861. The unit was assigned first to the 3rd and then the 5th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. It saw action at Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. In the latter battle Jeffrey suffered his only wound. How severe it was and how long he was absent is not known. The 2nd also fought at North Anna, Bethesda Church and Petersburg. Jeffrey was mustered out at Boston on October 17, 1864.

A widower before the war, Jeffrey married again in 1871. He continued to work as a tanner and was an active member of the Masonic Lodge. He died of pneumonia on May 10, 1882 at Boston and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester, Massachusetts.  [ad]
