CARTE DE VISITE OF NEW JERSEY SURGEON

$225.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 450-145

This image came from an envelope where it was stored with other images over the years. The plain white envelope is marked on the front in pen & ink, “Photographs of Civil War / Cols Thompson & Potter / Surgeon John Bowen / & / Father J. B. Potter”. A photocopy of the envelope is enclosed. The Potter [450-147] & Thompson [450-146] images from this envelope are listed separately.

The CDV is of John B. Bowen who served in the 34th New Jersey Infantry. The image is a nearly-full standing view (down to the ankles) in uniform. He holds his kepi in hand. Back features pen & ink ID, “Dr. John Bowen”, and Philadelphia photographer’s backmark. Nice clean image, bottom corners of mount trimmed slightly.

Bowen enlisted on 9/25/1863 as a surgeon; resigned commission on 5/27/1864. His association to the other images/soldiers in the 12th NJ seems to come through other Potter-family members who enlisted in the 34th.  [jet]
