These six images are from a group of eight images and the envelope they have been stored in over the years. Seven are CDVs and one is a small tintype mounted in a CDV card. The plain white envelope is marked on the front in pen & ink, “Photographs of Civil War / Cols Thompson & Potter / Surgeon John Bowen / & / Father J. B. Potter”.  The Thompson [450-146] & Bowen [450-145] images from this envelope are listed separately.

Two of the CDVs are of William E. Potter who served with the 12th New Jersey Infantry. One presents him full standing in a 9-button frock with shoulder straps and kepi on pedestal. “12” is clearly visible on kepi under magnification. Image is extremely clear with very good contrast. Gutekunst-Philadelphia backmark and pen & ink identification on back. Second CDV of him is bust view with lieutenant straps just visible. Another clear photo with one “rub” on right shoulder. Back features pen & ink ID, revenue stamp, and Philadelphia photographer’s backmark. Remaining six images are of his wife and other family members.

William Potter received degrees from Princeton and Harvard. He enlisted on 8/14/1862; mustered out 6/4/1865. Rose through ranks to Brevet-Major. Wounded at The Wilderness. Active in New Jersey politics after the war. One of William’s pre-war diaries is in Princeton University’s library collection.

Nice images from a desirable Civil War regiment.  [jet]
