CDV is a chest-up view of Major Henry Benner. He is wearing a dark colored coat with stand-up collar and shoulder boards.

Henry Snyder Benner was born in 1830 in Straban Township, Pennsylvania. He was a resident of Gettysburg where he worked as a granite cutter. He enlisted at the age of 31 on September 28, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant. On December 14, 1861 he was commissioned into Co. “K”, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed as wounded on May 31, 1862 in Fair Oaks, Virginia. He was promoted to Captain on February 5, 1863. On April 20, 1864 he is listed as a POW in Plymouth, North Carolina. He was later confined at Columbia, South Carolina, and was returned on March 1, 1865. He was then promoted to Major on June 1, 1865 and mustered out on June 25, 1865 at New Berne, North Carolina. After the war, Benner worked as a teller at the Gettysburg National Bank, then went into the grain and warehouse business. In 1885 President Grover Cleveland appointed Benner Postmaster of Gettysburg. At the expiration of his term he purchased a grocery store on Chambersburg St. Benner was a member of G.A.R. Post #9 in Gettysburg. He died on December 22, 1904 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint which reads, “HENSZEY 7 CO., PHOTOGRAPHERS, 812 ARCH STREET, PHILADELPHIA. NO. 7854”. Also present on reverse is the signature which reads, “YOURS TRULY, H.S. BENNER, LATE MAJ 101 PA V. VOLS, GETTYSBURG PA”.

Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age.    [sm]
