CDV is a chest-up view of George Browning wearing a civilian frock coat, vest. white shirt and cravat with pin.
George Browning was born on April 21, 1837, and was a resident of Salem, MA where he worked as a clerk. He enlisted at the age of 26 on May 25, 1861 as a 1st Sergeant in Co. “C”, 2nd MA Infantry. Browning was wounded on August 9, 1862 at Cedar Mountain, Virginia. He was discharged for wounds on December 24, 1862. On June 13, 1863 he was commissioned into 1st Veteran Reserve Corps. He mustered out on August 5, 1867. During his service, Browning received several promotions- 2nd Lieut. on February 11, 1862, 1st Lieut. on August 10, 1862, 1st Lieut. on June 13, 1863 (as of 1st VRC), Captain on March 13, 1865 by Brevet, and Major on March 13, 1865 by Brevet. Browning died on August 29, 1871 and is buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Salem, MA.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint which reads, “JONES, SALEM, MASS, 214 ESSEX STREET”. Also present on reverse is the signature which reads, “YOURS TRULY, GEORGE F. BROWNING”.
Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age. [sm]
